The End of the Line-3

Our whiskey priest is on his was to freedom. He is but a few days’ journey from the capitol where he will be safe. But yet again, we run into none other than the mestizo. The last two times our priest has conversed with him, nothing bad has happened. Hopefully this time will be the same. Nope, not quite. The whiskey priest has walked into a trap. The lieutenant and a group of soldiers are waiting for him. There seems to be no hope of escape. Will the priest make it out alive? The lieutenant is in a hurry to get back to the prison with the priest. The journey takes two days which is a lot less time than it took the priest to get from the prison to the location of capture. In prison, the priest is given his own private cell and some brandy to reflect upon his life as he waits for tomorrow.
The sun rises as the time draws near. The priest has been convicted of treason and is to be killed later today. Time has slowed but not enough. If only our priest could find a way not to die. Unfortunately reader, it is inevitable, the whiskey priest has been shot and killed. There are no more priests left besides Padre Jose who lives quite unhappily with his wife.
The end has come to the journey of the whiskey priest. And so, dear reader, I am inclined to say that this is my last entry on The Power and the Glory. We may meet again, dear reader, but for now, I say good bye.

Arresting Alcohol-2.2

The priest has met a beggar in the plaza and has commenced in conversation with him. They are talking about alcohol which is an interesting subject of conversation since it isn’t quite legal here in Mexico. This is not something that I would expect this priest to talk about since he is trying to avoid being put in prison, but they seem to be having a very intriguing conversation anyway. This beggar seems to be fluent in finding how to get alcohol and looks like he knows a guy who can get some of that illegal beverage. As they continue to converse amongst themselves, they come to the agreement that the beggar will bring the priest to the guy he knows who just happens to be the Governor’s cousin.
After waiting in the room of the Governor’s cousin for a little while, the man they were waiting to arrive arrives and they sit and chat for a little while. While they were in the Governor’s cousin’s room, the Chief of Police comes and joins in the conversation and the consumption of brandy and wine. They stay for a little while longer and then they have to leave for they have previous engagements to attend to. While the priest heads out to find a place to stay for the night, he runs into some red shirts and gets put in prison for drinking alcohol. Since he has no money, he is forced to stay the night and clean the prison cells the next morning. During his night in prison, he tells all the fellow inmates that he is the priest who is being searched for. The other prisoners do not tell the police that he is the priest and so, he gets let out of prison after he has done the series of tasks that he had been given to do.

Running from Danger to Danger-2.1

As we continue to follow the journey of the whiskey priest, we travel to a village that the priest has avoided for years. Why? That village is the home of his daughter and her mother. Yes, his daughter, one thing no priest should ever have. While staying in this village, the police have come through in search of information on the whereabouts of our beloved priest. Miraculously, all the villagers claim to have never seen him even though he, himself is hiding amongst the crowd of villagers. The police, following the lieutenant’s orders, have decided to take one of the villagers as a prisoner for producing no information concerning the priest. Before the police can take the newly arrested man away, the priest, without giving away his true identity, tries to convince the police to take him instead because he cannot bear the fact that the innocent villager will be taken hostage while he still runs around trying to hide from the police. Unfortunately, the police refused take the whiskey priest as their prisoner instead. The priest feels bad about what pains he has caused the village and decides to leave in search of a place here he will not be hunted.
During his journey, he stops in a different village for a break and to ask for directions to the town of Carmen. While there, he finds a man who has but few yellowed teeth left in his mouth. This man is also headed to Carmen and decides to help the priest reach his destination. As they travel through the woods on the path to Carmen, the stranger figures out that the priest is a priest and not just an ordinary man who wanted to travel to Carmen. Although the man keeps calling the priest “father”, the whiskey priest refuses to confess to the man that he is a priest. And they go on their way to Carmen.

The Shed out Back-1.2

The last thing you want to do is hide someone running from the government. Even worse, a priest hiding from the Mexican police. And yet, we go to the Fellows family who has done such a thing. Mr. and Mrs. Fellow's daughter, Coral, has taken in this fugitive priest without her parents' knowledge. She has taken the liberty of hiding this man in the family's barn. If only she understood the risks she has taken and the danger she has put her whole family in. Her intentions may have been right, but you cannot do what may be right without being willing to take full responsibility for your actions. The poor child, she has no idea what she has done. She trusted her father and told him about the visitor in the barn. Unfortunately, Captain Fellows did not approve of the visitor and was quite unhappy about his daughter's decision. And yet, he does not want this stranger to walk out into the danger of the country during the day, but to wait until night. Either Captain Fellows is concerned about this man's well being or not has yet to be revealed. As we look to this priest we can only wonder where he is headed and where he came from.
Who is this priest and what is happening to him and other priests all over Mexico? Many, of the priests have either gone into hiding and are constantly fleeing from the police, or have been shot for refusing to go against their beliefs. One priest, actually chose a third option. He chose to get married and live his life as a normal person. But, he is known all over the country because of his decision.
Our decisions effect our lives. Even the teeny tiny decisions we make without thinking much about them. We all have to make choices and we have to live with the outcomes of the choices we make. Next time you go to do something, think about what the outcome will be and if it what you are going to do is really worth doing.
Good bye reader and never stop exploring.

A Quick Run to Port-1.1

We follow Mr. Tench as he heads out to do his errands for the day. As he heads down the path, he seems to be distracted for he keeps pondering about what he came to the port for.  So what did this dentist come to town for? He went for an ether cylinder. Nothing seems to be unusual about his trip today… oh wait… can it be? Yes, yes, Mr. Tench is talking to someone. Who? I have no idea. He is not from around here. What is his business with Mr. Tench? Come reader, let us check this out! Darn, just missed their conversation down here by the docks. Maybe I shall be able to sneak behind them. They seem to be headed back towards Mr. Tench’s house.
Back at Mr. Tench’s house, they seem to be drinking some sort of… brandy? Here? Is Mr. Tench sick? Brandy is to be used for medicinal purposes only.  Their conversation reveals nothing new about the stranger, this Mr. Unknown. But do not be despaired reader for I have been given insight into Mr. Tench’s mysterious and unknown family. He had two sons, one of which seems to have died. Mr. Tench does not keep in contact with his child and wife (who quite possibly has remarried by now) who live in a Christian country.
This stranger seems to be quite set upon not missing the General Obregon when it leaves port later today. This is one intriguing man who seem unable to decide whether he is a doctor or not; all depending upon some unknown reason. This, my friend, is becoming one person who MUST be followed... what other secrets and information may be revealed by future events? Oh dear, unfortunately, this mystery man has seemed to have left without me noticing. Hmmm, what did Mr. Tench just find? A book left by our dear unknown friend. La Eterna Martir, i shall look into what exactly is included inside that binding... Until then, good bye reader and never stop exploring.
